Timber decking structure

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you position a deck anywhere?

Absolutely, but it all comes down to personal choice. Timber decking is wonderfully adaptable, you can even have a stand-alone structure within a garden with walkways, verandas and balconies. Choose sunny, open sites or place them in the shade. We would evaluate your site, surveying the full perimeter of the house and what amenties it will provide, such as a play area for children, a place for relaxation and entertainment, a barbecue area or a hot tub/spa pool. Remember, your deck will be an outdoor living room.

What is the average life of a deck?

Well maintaineed decks built from preserved timber will last for decades. Hardwood species or tanalised softwoods constructed in a structurally sound way are highly durable. Occasional cleaning will keep it looking good.

Need decks be elaborate?

No, but today's decks are becoming more elaborate in design to cater for different amenities, personal styles and tastes. Good planning is essesntial; geometric six and eight sided designs look more interesting than a simple rectangle. Balustrades, pergolas, steps and planters all add individuality.

I have heard wet decks are slippery. What are the issues?

Some timber can be, but no more so than stone flags or tiles. Modern grooved anti-slip deck boards are the answer for complete peace of mind. Whatever type of decking you choose, keep it clean and well-maintained to avoid having a slippery surface.

How should I Iook after my timber decking?

In early springtime give the deck a really good clean with a stiff brush and hose pipe or jet-wash. It may be prudent to re-treat it with a water repellant every few years.

Can pre-treated trimber be harmful in any way?

No. Pressure-impregnated wood preservatives are completely safe. They protect the timber from the risk of decay and insect attack in the most extreme environments. The highly effective preservative is locked within the timber.

In choosing a timber deck, am I harming the environment?

No. The timber we use comes from manages forests where responsible and careful planting programmes ensure continuous replacement and forest conservation. This, along with the pressure treatment against decay, ensures that Northern forests will continue to flourish.
